What makes VSTAR Universe different from other Japanese Pokémon packs?

Summary

VSTAR Universe is a Sword & Shield high-class pack released in Japan on December 2, 2022, with 10 cards for ¥550 and the expansion mark s12a. It is the pack that introduced two rarities, AR (Art Rare) and SAR (Special Art Rare). Each pack guarantees one V, VSTAR, or VMAX, and the set reprints a number of strong cards.

Where AR and SAR began

The official page announces AR and SAR under the heading that they are newly arriving, and calls them new rarities. Its gallery shows 17 AR cards and 25 SAR cards. Each carries artwork different from the regular card of the same Pokémon, and each has its own collection number.

Reprints and the s12a mark

Reprinted cards include Simisear V, for example. A reprint in this pack carries the s12a expansion mark, while the earlier printing carries the mark of the product it first came in, so the mark tells you whether a card is the VSTAR Universe version.
