Can you tell which product or campaign a Pokémon promo card came from?

Summary

Often, yes, because Pokémon's official product pages list the promos packed in each product. On the English side, the official pages show Elite Trainer Boxes and collections carrying one or two promos each, while Japanese promos turn up in bundled sets and in giveaway campaigns tied to pack purchases. Popular Pokémon have many promos, so a name alone will not narrow a listing to one card.

Japanese promos from sets and campaigns

The Pokémon Card 151 card file set, priced at ¥2,200, included one promo each of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. The 2026 30th CELEBRATION FUTURISTIC BOX includes two different Pikachu ex promos, one of each.

For the 25th anniversary, Japan issued the Promo Card Pack 25th ANNIVERSARY edition, with 25 cards running from a 1996 Charizard to a 2017 Tapu Lele-GX. It was handed out through campaigns such as one pack free with four packs of the 25th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION expansion, and its cards cannot be used in official tournaments.
