How is a booster box different from a pack, a case, or a single?

Summary

A booster pack is the smallest sealed unit, a booster box holds a set number of the same pack, and a case holds several boxes. A single is one specific card, so buying it involves no luck of the draw. Pack size and price change from product to product, and many boxes add accessories to the packs, so the words "box" and "booster" in a product name do not settle what is inside.

Pack size and price by product

Japanese Pokémon products alone show how much a pack can vary. The ムニキスゼロ expansion pack released on January 23, 2026 holds 5 cards for ¥180 including tax, the Pokémon Card 151 enhanced expansion pack (June 16, 2023) holds 7 cards for ¥290, and the シャイニートレジャーex (Shiny Treasure ex) high-class pack (December 1, 2023) holds 10 cards for ¥550. The 30th CELEBRATION pack released on September 16, 2026 costs ¥360 and contains six holo cards, one of them always a Pikachu card.

The official pages note that cards are inserted at random. Apart from a guaranteed slot like the Pikachu in 30th CELEBRATION, the contents stay unknown until the pack is opened.

Boxes that are not booster boxes

Some official set pages list no box of packs at all. The ムニキスゼロ page instead features the Special Card Set メガエルレイドex (Mega Gallade ex) at ¥1,980, which combines 8 packs with promo cards and a coin. Pokémon Card 151 had card file sets at ¥2,200 with 5 packs, 3 promo cards, a binder, and a poster.

English products follow the same pattern. The first expansion of the Mega Evolution Series, launched September 26, 2025, came out in booster packs, Elite Trainer Boxes, and various collections. Two products with the same number of packs can differ in price because of what else is in the box.
